Federal agents raided two city departments and the office of a lawyer with ties to Mayor John Street, who said the raids shed no light on an FBI probe uncovered earlier this month when listening devices were found in his office.
FBI agents on Thursday spent several hours gathering documents at the downtown offices of Ronald A. White, an attorney who has raised money for Street, performs legal work for the city and specializes in helping clients win government contracts.
Agents also seized records from the city’s finance department and the Board of Pensions and Retirement, according to City Solicitor Nelson Diaz.
Street declined to say specifically what information the agents had requested, but said the documents covered a range of city functions.
I’ve been spending whatever time I can snatch this week reading Terrorism and Tyranny by James Bovard. It so happens that last night I read the chapter called Salvation Through Surveillance which deals with the Patriot Act, it’s spawn II, COINTELPRO, TIPS, the evildoers Poindexter and Hoover, etc., etc…so this ‘investigation’ of Street seems even more suspect now than it did when I first read of it.
Why Street, why now? It’s one thing to ponder he’s guilty of some criminal action and deserves it, but to do so when the head of Halliburton is smiling big for the cameras and denouncing charges of price gouging in Iraq?
The entire scenario smacks of a Rove/Bush PSYOPS campaign.
