The calm before the storm

Israeli efforts to engage in talks with Syria and Hamas have generally been praised as a challenge to the U.S. posture, without any historical precedent for believing the interests are not aligned.

Could there be other motives for this sudden interest in making nice?

No-bid oil leases underway in Iraq. In the midst of signing-away the futures of Iraqi citizens, the U.S. is in dire need of positive PR, especially regarding its special relationship with Israelis.

Are seasoned adversaries waging peace or sizing-up reaction to a strike on Iran? How do Israelis and friends withstand the consequences of yet another unnecessary, pre-emptive strike, not only locally, but throughout the international community?

Establishing the mirage that Bush is some sort of peacemaker as U.S. elections approach encourages U.S. voters to embrace his vision of occupation as a building block of democracy.

Finally, who builds the wooden horse to transport the “multinational” Arab force into Gaza? A detail that provides the perfect deal breaker when the storm is over and safer to resume business as usual.
