PHR: U.S. Cover-Up of Massacre in Afghanistan

11 July 2009

The New York Times reports on the front page of its Saturday edition that the Bush Administration impeded at least three federal investigations into alleged war crimes in Afghanistan.

This revelation from Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter James Risen comes after nearly eight years of forensic investigation, documentation and advocacy by Physicians for Human Rights.

In November 2001, as many as 2,000 detainees were allegedly massacred by US-allied Afghan troops led by General Dostum. The dead were buried in a mass grave at Dasht-e-Leili, Afghanistan. US military and intelligence personnel were operating jointly and accepted the surrender of the prisoners jointly with General Dostum’s forces in northern Afghanistan.

Please read the story and view PHR’s new online video, War Crimes and the White House: The Bush Administration’s Cover-Up of the Dasht-e-Leili Massacre.

Share these resources with friends and colleagues. And sign our petition calling for Attorney General Eric Holder to let the FBI do its job by proceeding with the war crimes investigation that the Bush administration shut down.

PREVIEW: Erased-wiped off the map from C.I. COMUNICACIÓN on Vimeo.

Dear friends,

Finally, Alberto Arce’s film about Israel’s massive attack on Gaza has been aired on Spanish television.

The 55 minute documentary ‘Erased: Wipe Off the Map’ begins with the entry of the the fifth and last Free Gaza Movement boat to make it to Gaza before covering the impact of the siege and harrowing events during the 22-day assault including attacks on Civil Defence centres, paramedics, children, and the UN HQ.

For now its only available with Spanish subtitles so non-Arabic speakers may struggle, but there is much in English and the footage speaks a thousand words.

The streaming (watch live on the internet) version is here.

From the Feuilletons: Süddeutsche Zeitung

Süddeutsche Zeitung 10.07.2009

On July 1, an Egyptian woman was stabbed to death in a court in Dresden by the Russian-German defendant. Marwa el-Sherbini was killed while giving evidence about how the man had insulted her for wearing the hijab. The Egyptian writer Alaa Al-Aswani is angered by the double standards of the Western media which clamours in outrage when a woman is killed during the demonstrations in Iran but ignores the death of an Arab woman at the hands of a white man. “The reason being that the murder of Neda was the fault of the Iranian regime, whereas the murder of Marwa shows that terrorism is not solely an Arab and Muslim domain. A white German terrorist kills an innocent woman, a stranger, and makes an attempt on her husband’s life – and for the simple reason that she is Muslim and wears the hijab. The Western media couldn’t give a damn. The West, its politicians and its media, always take a standpoint which is hostile to the Arabs and Muslims. This is an undeniable fact.”
