Ruth Benn and Ed Hedemann are co-editors of the book “War Tax Resistance.”
Hedemann said today: “For over 30 years, I have taken the money that would be due to the IRS and re-routed it to community groups. I object to military spending and I don’t want to take part in it. During the Vietnam War, I refused to join the military. It seemed inconsistent of me to refuse to join, but to pay for others to do so as well as for the munitions.”
Coordinator for the National War Tax Resistance Coordinating Committee, Benn said today: “In at least 56 communities across the U.S., demonstrations will be held at Internal Revenue Service offices, Federal buildings, post offices, and other public places on Friday, April 15, to protest the use of tax dollars to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Many of these events will include people giving their tax dollars to community groups instead of to the IRS.”

CHICAGO STREETS FILLING WITH DRUGS, GANGS AND… ORGANIC FOODS
Six years ago, in a working class African-American neighborhood on Chicago’s West Side, LaDonna Redmond was feeling frustrated about the total absence of healthy and organic foods in her area. “Folks say black people won’t buy organic food–that all we want to eat is Cheetos,” says Redmond. “You could buy $200 sneakers, semiautomatic weapons and heroin, but you couldn’t get an organic tomato.” In response, Redmond volunteered her time to start a weekly organic farmer’s market at a local school playground, organized local residents to transform vacant lots into neighborhood organic gardens, and brought nutrition classes and salad bars into area schools. LaDonna is not only teaching Chicago residents how to buy and grow local and organic foods, she is also teaching all of us a valuable lesson: Never underestimate the amount of positive change that one person can inspire. The Organic Consumers Association’s new “Breaking the Chains” campaign provides people like you with tools to start bringing about the same kind of positive change in your area.
