Late to the event, I’ve nearly finished Imperial Hubris. Scheuer has impressive skills for collecting information and imparts it precisely. If you questioned his patriotism when this book was published you couldn’t have read it. His blood spills red, white, and blue onto the pages. Those who continue to vilify Scheuer for being nothing more than a critic of Dear Leader are self-serving and absurd and so is his recent defence of rendition.
I mention Imperial Hubris because Juan Cole’s comment that “a radical anti-Saudi hit on Hariri is perfectly plausible and also cannot simply be dismissed” would not seem fantastic at all if Scheuer had been given the forum he still seeks.
