I think it’s a silly assumption in the context Matthews and Page are inferring; that Bill is intentionally sabotaging Kerry. Clinton is a young, vital player who is withering on the vine and hungry for attention. And I doubt his ego has ever recovered from being kept under lock and key during Gore’s run. In his mind he’s helping Kerry not hindering him.
But I do think it’s fair to say the Democrats aren’t anxious to take over the mess that George & Co. have made with their tactical support. The duopoly would ultimately fare better if he had four more years to dig himself, and his party, a deeper grave. And America would have a scapegoat to hide behind for our reprehensible policies.
