[April 7, 2004 – 8:05PM] Foreign Minister Alexander Downer says he is saddened by News Corporation’s decision to move its home to the United States.
Chairman and chief executive Rupert Murdoch announced on Tuesday, News Corp’s home country of incorporation would be moved from Adelaide to New York by the end of the year.
“As a South Australian, I sort of am (saddened),” Mr Downer said in Adelaide.
“It’s a sort of end of an era.”
“It’s a little sad but News Corporation have to make commercial judgments – it’s a business, not just an emotional outfit.
“I can understand why he (Mr Murdoch) has made the decision but I think, as a South Australian, I would have to say I’m a little sorry to see it happen.”
It saddens me too, Mr. Downer.
