From my e-mail:
In a letter sent today to Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Mark Everson, Democracy 21 President Fred Wertheimer reiterated his request that the IRS move promptly to revoke the tax exempt status of Celebrations for Children, Inc. (CFC), a charity associated with House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, and that appropriate penalties be imposed for violations of the nation’s tax laws. (The letter is available at www.democracy21.org.)
In this letter, Wertheimer, as he did in an IRS complaint filed on December 4, 2003, describes the so-called “charity” as a “scheme organized by Representative DeLay to use a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) charitable organization to finance his political operations at the Republican national convention in New York this summer – including a week-long schedule of parties, Broadway shows, golfing tournaments, yacht cruises, dinners and political events. The scheme also involves providing these perks and benefits, free of charge, to all House Republicans who want to attend the events.”
