Nader’s running would be ‘news’ if the GOP or Rove were behind it so this is my last thought on it unless that story breaks.
But while I support Nader’s right to run and feel those deriding him only hurt themselves, it doesn’t say much for his willingness to work in a smart way to change the system he claims to oppose.
He might have gained more ground for one or two causes by promising to endorse the candidate that adopted them. I’d be interested to know if he attempted something like that and was rebuffed. But how much weight will his positions be given now that he’s been relegated to the ‘spoilers’ category?
With help from the GOP Nader made it clear there was no difference between Bush and Gore. How much difference has Ralph made? If his real objective is to be gatekeeper of progressive issues and voters, where has he been for three years? Where is the progressive party he claimed to be building in 2000? Or does acting like a Jack-in-the-Box whenever a presidential election comes around pass for dedication now?
Nader is no lifeboat in a sea inhabited by many voters who haven’t referenced an historical source since they were made to memorise the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria.
He’s pulling in his net and taking in the rays.
