The Guardian reports:
International lawyers and anti-war campaigners reacted with astonishment yesterday after the influential Pentagon hawk Richard Perle conceded that the invasion of Iraq had been illegal.
In a startling break with the official White House and Downing Street lines, Mr Perle told an audience in London: “I think in this case international law stood in the way of doing the right thing.”
I think it’s part of their evolving ‘strategy’ to be ‘honest’ about their intention to permanently vacate international law in order to advance American hegemony. Suddenly it’s okay to talk about pre-emptively striking Middle Eastern ‘dictators’ in order to replace their regimes with ‘democracy’ and ‘freedom’, as Daniel Pipes spins rhetorically here.
Maybe they figure another campaign built upon lies would be one too many.
On the other hand, considering the apathy of most to their actions so far, it’s more likely just an ego thing.
