EXCERPT: “Evidently, the Bush administration is behind this decision,” said George Naylor, president of the Washington-based National Family Farm Coalition. “No one would think of fearing Jose’s presence in this country except multinational corporations with a profit motive.”
GM WATCH COMMENT: This is how the news of the French farmer Jose Bove being banned from entering the U.$. was received by CS Prakash’s AgBioView: “And Now for Some Really Good News… Jose Bove Sent Packing by U.S.”
It’s interesting that the banning of people who challenge major corporations is considered “Really Good News”, while the exclusion of those companies’ suspect imports is considered an “Outrage!” that requires the intervention of the WTO to try and force through their entry.
“But Bove has been to prison for his actions”, we can hear the likes of Prakash protest. Well, so too has Prakash’s fellow GM propagandist, Dr Douglas Powell, and for far worse than tearing up GM crops, yet steps were specifically taken to get round Powell’s criminal convictions in order to allow him to continue to enter the United States. (see Powell’s profile)
Somehow we don’t remember Prakash saying that that was an “Outrage!”
Activists: U.S. violated freedoms by barring French farmer at JFK
VERENA DOBNIK
Associated Press, 9 February 2006
Bove and his buddies have destroyed over $2 million in research facilities and destroyed a family-owned restaurant because it was branded McDonalds. And Bove’s group was implicated in a bombing of a McDonald’s that killed a cashier when she showed up for work. The UnaBomber doesn’t like GMOs and expresses himself with loud banging noises. Osama protests against Korporate Amerika. An Earth Liberation Front cell is on trial for a string of arson attacks. You want to boo-hoo for these creeps and thugs like they’re victims of political oppression? You’re as sick as they are.
Do you have some sources to go along with your character assassination?
Well, a quick Google search for Jose Bove and McDonald’s did reveal a number of articles mentioning his involvement with the “dismantling” of a McD’s, although I saw no mention of a bombing. He also is apparently linked to the destruction of some GM crops. With that said though, I find it ridiculous to compare him to people like Osama.
While I may condemn any violence used in such activism, I most certainly object to the act of banning Bove from the US. And as Diane points out, it is certainly hypocritical to keep Bove from entering the country while allowing GMO whore Doug Powell from entering the country. Methinks that if Bove was an activist on the other side of the debate, he’d be in the US right now.
Hi freeman – I didn’t write any of it. It’s an e-mail from GMWatch I thought deserved some attention as I made my way out the door to work that morning.
Bove served 44 days for dismantling the McDonald’s, a “strictly non violent” action according to Wikipedia, taken not against Korporate America as Schiller queerly stated, but in protest of GM crops used by the place (in France, btw). Much more info to be found there including that he served 10 months for destruction of transgenic crops. Jacques Chirac intervened with a pardon to reduce his sentence. This makes for interesting reading as well.
I think Schiller must be the first person I’ve ever encountered to say Osama is on a crusade against GM crops. What a hoot.
I added a “from my e-mail” to the post. Apologies for the confusion, didn’t intend to mislead.
