via tex, two British soldiers dressed as civilians, “undercover” so the official story goes, engaged in a gun battle with Iraqi police, killing one. They were arrested and broken out of prison by British troops, at least one, possibly two tanks set ablaze by Basra citisens. It’s believed 150 prisoners also fled the jail breached by the tank.
A commenter at Lenin’s Tomb sums it up perfectly:
Whatever the Brit soldiers were doing they clearly didn’t want the Iraqi police finding out coz they sent in a couple of tanks to break them out of jail. I didn’t know the British army ‘did’ cowboy movies. In any case those Shi’a Supremacists foiled them in their dastardly way. They even had the gall to set a couple tanks on fire.
Can you believe those terrorist, fanatical, anti-democratic bastards? Good thing we’re at war with them!

An Iraqi official said half a dozen armored vehicles had smashed into the jail, the Reuters news agency reported. The provincial governor, Mohammed Walli, told news agencies that the British assault was “barbaric, savage and irresponsible.”
Mohammed al-Abadi, an official in the Basra governorate, said the two men looked suspicious to police.
“A policeman approached them and then one of these guys fired at him. Then the police managed to capture them,” Abadi told reporters.
“They refused to say what their mission was. They said they were British soldiers and (suggested) to ask their commander about their mission,” he added.
