Condi goes shopping.
Hastert tightens his belt:
4:07 p.m. – WASHINGTON (AP): It makes no sense to spend billions of dollars to rebuild a city that’s seven feet under sea level, House Speaker Dennis Hastert said of federal assistance for hurricane-devastated New Orleans.
Hastert is right, it makes sense to spend billions of dollars rebuilding somewhere above sea level, or somewhere below sea level that’s not in the path of hurricanes, but not somewhere below sea level in the path of hurricanes that over the course of the next century are going to become more powerful and destructive. As to whether he’ll vote for reconstruction funding for people encouraged by the state to build below sea level in the path of tropical storms in another matter.
I agree – it’s his inconsistency that bugs me. Where is Mr. Sensible whenever old white folks down in Florida are knocked out of their beach chairs? He’s handing out checks with lots of zeros in them.
I have no idea if the 10 billion figure they’re throwing around for a sunk city and a tri-state disaster area meets the benchmark set by Charley relief efforts, but it strikes me as a bit of a lowball.
Way to spear the Ledeen, smelly carp that he is.
