DAVOS-Gates meets Lamy as trade round concerns build

The meeting came as business leaders are becoming increasingly vocal about the danger of the trade round collapsing completely.<\/p>\n

“We are united in our concern that failure to restart the Doha Round discussion immediately and conclude them within the next six months will seriously damage the global community,” 15 top business chiefs said in a statement in Davos earlier.<\/p>\n

Ministers agree to resume global trade talks

“I believe we are back in business,” European Union Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson told Reuters<\/em> after the discussion on the fringes of the annual World Economic Forum gathering in the Alpine resort of Davos.<\/p>\n

Launched in 2001 to calm an anxious world economy after the Sept 11 attacks and to ease poverty, the so-called Doha round all but collapsed last July over the politically highly sensitive issue of farm trade.<\/p>\n

Lamy called a halt to the negotiations, saying ministers needed time to reflect. But recent bilateral discussions between the EU, the United States and other key trading states such as Japan and Brazil, have indicated they may be ready to make some of the concessions that Lamy has said are key to a breakthrough.<\/p>\n

A deal requires Washington to make deeper cuts to farm subsidies, the EU and some leading developing country importers, such as India, to accept lower farm tariffs and for developing countries as a whole to slash industrial duties.<\/p>\n

The WTO chief says what has already been agreed in five years of negotiations amounts to more liberalization and opening of trade than anything achieved in multilateral talks before. [ More<\/a> ]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Bono wants checks cashed for Africa

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) – Governments in rich countries that promised to help Africa fight poverty and disease should come good on their offers of cash, rock star and activist Bono said.<\/p>\n

Bono is a regular on the world business and aid circuit, campaigning for richer countries to forgive African nations’ debt and help fund their future.<\/p>\n

Meeting political and business leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, he said late on Friday it was time for rich countries to come good on promises they made to cancel the debt.<\/p>\n

“There were some serious promises made. The checks were signed but as you know, politicians like signing checks but they don’t like cashing them,” Bono told reporters in Davos. [ More<\/a> ]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
