PNHP: Health Bill Leaves 23 Million Uninsured

Institute for Public Accuracy
Monday, March 22, 2010

Physicians for a National Health Program just released a statement: “Health Bill Leaves 23 Million Uninsured: A False Promise of Reform,” which states: “As much as we would like to join the celebration of the House’s passage of the health bill last night, in good conscience we cannot. We take no comfort in seeing aspirin dispensed for the treatment of cancer.

“Instead of eliminating the root of the problem — the profit-driven, private health insurance industry — this costly new legislation will enrich and further entrench these firms. The bill would require millions of Americans to buy private insurers’ defective products, and turn over to them vast amounts of public money.”

Alison Weir: Why Does Michigan Radio Refuse to Talk to Me?

This has been going on for months, and they just can’t get their story straight.

WUOM 91.7 Ann Arbor/Detroit, WFUM-FM
91.1 Flint, WVGR 104.1 Grand Rapids

By Alison Weir
Executive Director, If Americans Knew

Last fall the Flint chapter of our organization, which provides facts on Israel-Palestine, contacted Michigan Radio about becoming a sponsor of the station. (This consists of giving the station $1,000, and in return they air a number of spots
announcing your organization and additional information.)

This was moving forward, until suddenly the Michigan Radio representative emailed that they would not allow us to be a sponsor. (They did eventually allow a different organization to sponsor an announcement for us, but this group was not allowed to include our organization’s name in their spot).

Tony Leys: Postville plant supervisors still on the lam

By Tony Leys, Des Moines Register, 15 March 2010

Israeli officials say they would be glad to hand over two former Iowa meatpacking supervisors – if U.S. officials could determine where in Israel the men are hiding to avoid felony charges.

The men, Hosam Amara, 45, and Zeev Levi, 51, are former chicken-line supervisors at the Agriprocessors plant in Postville.

They allegedly fled to Israel shortly after a massive immigration raid at the plant in May 2008. They both face federal felony charges of conspiring to harbor illegal immigrants for financial gain and conspiring to obtain false immigration papers for the workers.

Former Agriprocessors laborers have said Amara was a harsh supervisor responsible for many of the worker abuses that made headlines after the raid. For example, they said, he demanded bribes or forced them to buy overpriced cars from him to obtain jobs or assignment to day shifts.

How is it possible that Amara and Levi could find refuge for nearly two years in Israel, one of the United States’ closest allies?
