taken by tears like
\nan aging chorus girl
\nwho has gotten her last check.<\/p>\n
a hanky is in order your lord your
\nworship.<\/p>\n
the blackbirds are rough today
\nlike
\ningrown toenails
\nin an overnight
\njail—
\nwine wine whine,
\nthe blackbirds run around and
\nfly around
\nharping about
\nSpanish melodies and bones.<\/p>\n
and everywhere is
\nnowhere—
\nthe dream is as bad as
\nflapjacks and flat tires:<\/p>\n
why do we go on
\nwith our minds and
\npockets full of
\ndust
\nlike a bad boy just out of
\nschool—
\nyou tell
\nme,
\nyou who were a hero in some
\nrevolution
\nyou who teach children
\nyou who drink with calmness
\nyou who own large homes
\nand walk in gardens
\nyou who have killed a man and own a
\nbeautiful wife
\nyou tell me
\nwhy I am on fire like old dry
\ngarbage.<\/p>\n
we might surely have some interesting
\ncorrespondence.
\nit will keep the mailman busy.
\nand the butterflies and ants and bridges and
\ncemeteries
\nthe rocket-makers and dogs and garage mechanics
\nwill still go on a
\nwhile
\nuntil we run out of stamps
\nand\/or
\nideas.<\/p>\n
don’t be ashamed of
\nanything; I guess God meant it all

\nlocks on
