{"id":587,"date":"2004-08-08T10:58:23","date_gmt":"2004-08-08T14:58:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/karmalised.com\/wordpress\/?p=587"},"modified":"2004-08-08T10:58:23","modified_gmt":"2004-08-08T14:58:23","slug":"send-aid-not-bombs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/karmalised.com\/?p=587","title":{"rendered":"Send Aid Not Bombs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>John Prendergast of the International Crisis Group was on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.c-span.org\/homepage.asp?Cat=Series&#038;Code=WJE&#038;ShowVidNum=6&#038;Rot_Cat_CD=WJ&#038;Rot_HT=206&#038;Rot_WD=&#038;ShowVidDays=15&#038;ShowVidDesc=&#038;ArchiveDays=30\"><i>Washington Journal <\/i><\/a> this morning discussing Darfur and the urgent need for intervention there.  <\/p>\n<p>I wondered why Mr. Prendergast, the group&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crisisweb.org\/home\/index.cfm?id=1318&#038;l=1\">Special Adviser to the President<\/a>, seemed intent on promoting a military solution to this problem.  Take a look at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icg.org\/home\/index.cfm?id=2765&#038;l=1\">this<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icg.org\/home\/index.cfm?l=1&#038;id=2901\">this<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.icg.org\/home\/index.cfm\">for starters<\/a>).  Framing military intervention under the banner of humanitarian intervention is what this think tank is all about.<\/p>\n<p>If there is an acute crisis occurring why would anyone concerned waste time arguing for a military intervention, most especially, when it would not be as simple to implement as they suggest and its consequences would likely worsen the suffering of the victims we profess to aid?  And after satisfying the supply deficits, when there is time to discuss the root causes of this tragedy, shouldn&#8217;t both sides of the equation be considered?<\/p>\n<p>It seems to me people like Prendergast are pushing for a new Iraq complete with no-fly zones and sanctions, absent compromise of self-serving national interests, and dismissive of the carefull <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fas.org\/irp\/world\/para\/spla.htm\">historical<\/a> examination necessary to achieve a sustainable peace in the region.
