{"id":546,"date":"2004-06-28T12:48:45","date_gmt":"2004-06-28T16:48:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/karmalised.com\/wordpress\/?p=546"},"modified":"2004-06-28T12:48:45","modified_gmt":"2004-06-28T16:48:45","slug":"freedoms-just-another-word","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/karmalised.com\/?p=546","title":{"rendered":"Freedom&#8217;s Just Another Word"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Iraq&#8217;s new interim government was rushed into office two days early as a <a href=\"http:\/\/story.news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story&#038;u=\/afp\/iraq_us_transition\">tired<\/a> Paul Bremer fled <a href=\"http:\/\/story.news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story&#038;cid=574&#038;ncid=721&#038;e=1&#038;u=\/nm\/20040628\/wl_nm\/iraq_handover_scene_dc\">like a thief in the night<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Dogs sniffed for explosives, mobile phones were impounded and U.S. officials bombarded reporters with contradictory orders and scant information just moments before Iraq formally regained sovereign powers.<\/p>\n<p>Journalists had been hastily summoned for what was billed as U.S. administrator Paul Bremer&#8217;s last news conference before a handover not due until Wednesday, but the confusion and tight security suggested that something extraordinary was afoot.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And while the <i>NYT<\/i> is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/06\/28\/international\/middleeast\/28INSU.html?pagewanted=print&#038;position=\">quoting<\/a> extremely angry and disappointed Iraqis, as well, American commanders who say this &#8220;war cannot be won militarily,&#8221; George is <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story&#038;u=\/nm\/20040628\/ts_nm\/iraq_bush_dc_6\">practicing his new role as puppeteer<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Bush, who faces a tough re-election battle this year amid growing discontent over U.S. involvement in Iraq, said the formal handover in Baghdad was &#8220;a day of great hope for Iraqis and a day that terrorist enemies hoped never to see.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Asked if Prime Minister Iyad Allawi&#8217;s government, which took power two days earlier than expected, might impose martial law, Bush said &#8220;He (Allawi) may take tough security measures against Zarqawi &#8212; he may have to.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He will not cower in the face of brutal murder and neither will we,&#8221; said Bush.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know what&#8217;s more ridiculous.  The notion that Iraq is now free or that George will carry out his new duties effectively.<\/p>\n<p>Will Paul Wolfowitz claim that Bremer&#8217;s fleeing is only a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A8712-2004Jun26.html\"> rumour<\/a>?  Certainly an authourity that&#8217;s been busy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.karmalised.com\/archives\/000534.html\">siphoning<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iraqrevenuewatch.org\/\">billions<\/a> from the coffers of the occupied could have afforded a decent embassy bash; a public reception so all of Paul&#8217;s well wishers could have thanked him properly for a job well done.<\/p>\n<p>Earth to Aaron Brown:  CNN <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrc.org\/realitycheck\/2003\/fax20030710.asp\">doesn&#8217;t push rumours<\/a>?  It would take more time than I have today to find the complete list.  <\/p>\n<p>On another note.  I&#8217;ve been wondering how George &#038; Co., most especially their warmongering cheerleaders in the press, would spin the disastrous Iraq occupation and its tragic consequences. <\/p>\n<p>More than a few journalists and commentators are now waxing whimsically that perhaps history will set George free.   Not soon, mind you, but sometime in the far distant future, when we&#8217;d likely be too senile or otherwise incapacitated, for instance by death, to care if they&#8217;re right.<\/p>\n<p>What a chilling observation.
