{"id":514,"date":"2004-06-01T08:25:22","date_gmt":"2004-06-01T12:25:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/karmalised.com\/wordpress\/?p=514"},"modified":"2004-06-01T08:25:22","modified_gmt":"2004-06-01T12:25:22","slug":"brahimi-confirms-ghazi-al-yawars-appointment-to-largely-ceremonial-position","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/karmalised.com\/?p=514","title":{"rendered":"Brahimi confirms Ghazi al-Yawar&#8217;s appointment to &#8220;largely ceremonial position&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brahimi has confirmed Ghazi al-Yawar&#8217;s appointment as the president of Iraq&#8217;s interim government.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/06\/01\/international\/middleeast\/01POLI.html?ex=1086753600&#038;pagewanted=print&#038;position=\">According to<\/a> the <i>NYT<\/i>&#8216;s, this occurred because the Bush administration&#8217;s choice, Adnan Pachachi, refused the position.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Mr. Brahimi also announced that Ibrahim al-Jaafari, a Shiite from the Dawa party, and Rowsch Shaways, of the Kurdish Democratic party, were to be Mr. Yawar&#8217;s vice presidents.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Does this mean Bremer will not carry out his threat to <a href=\"http:\/\/electroniciraq.net\/news\/1534.shtml\">veto this appointment<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.juancole.com\/2004_06_01_juancole_archive.html#108606748245306964\">Juan Cole<\/a> gets into more detail about other posts and referring to the Allawis says their presence signifies a blow to Chalabi&#8217;s influence.  He goes on to recognise that &#8220;the old minister of finance was Kamel al-Gailani, a close Chalabi associate who supported unbridled robber baron capitalism.&#8221;  The new minister of finance, Adil Abdul Mahdi, &#8220;is from the Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq, a Shiite religious party with strong ties to Iran.&#8221;  Wouldn&#8217;t this suggest that although Chalabi&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/newstandardnews.net\/content\/?action=show_item&#038;itemid=451\">money train<\/a> is undergoing a search and seizure at the station the occupation remains on the same track and he&#8217;s still onboard?  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/jamail\/?articleid=2709\">Dahr Jamail<\/a> writes that the situation in Iraq is getting worse by the day.  It includes a disturbing account of &#8220;an assassination attempt on Ismail Zayer, the editor of the <i>New Sabah<\/i>, a newspaper Mr. Zayer founded after breaking ranks with the CPA-controlled <i>Sabah<\/i> newspaper.&#8221;  And this, amongst other observations:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One man I know, when asked what he thought about Alawi, said frankly, &#8220;He will be killed, <i>insh?allah<\/i>.&#8221; Another Iraqi friend said, &#8220;If he lasts a month, he?ll be very lucky.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Update: Would the Iraqi police witnessed in the assassination attempt Dahr Jamail described be part of the same force that <a href=\"http:\/\/story.news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story&#038;u=\/ap\/20040530\/ap_on_re_mi_ea\/iraq_chalabi&#038;cid=540&#038;ncid=1480\">closed the Ramadi offices of Ahmad Chalabi yesterday<\/a>?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brahimi has confirmed Ghazi al-Yawar&#8217;s appointment as the president of Iraq&#8217;s interim government.
