{"id":5063,"date":"2008-12-19T18:24:15","date_gmt":"2008-12-19T23:24:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/karmalised.com\/?p=5063"},"modified":"2008-12-19T18:24:15","modified_gmt":"2008-12-19T23:24:15","slug":"frank-donaghue-us-silent-about-destruction-of-war-crime-evidence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/karmalised.com\/?p=5063","title":{"rendered":"Frank Donaghue: US Silent About Destruction of War Crime Evidence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <strong>Frank Donaghue of <a href=\"http:\/\/physiciansforhumanrights.org\/\">Physicians for Human Rights<\/a> writes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last week McClatchy Newspapers reported that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcclatchydc.com\/227\/story\/57649.html\">mass graves at  Dasht-e-Leili in Northern Afghanistan, first discovered by PHR researchers in  January 2002, have been destroyed<\/a>. According to witnesses, the remains  buried there are of prisoners who surrendered to Northern Alliance and US forces  in November 2001, following the fall of the city of Kunduz. The victims of the  Dasht-e-Leili massacre allegedly died from suffocation inside cargo  containers.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"The Death Convoy Of Afghanistan\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/id\/65473\">Experts from PHR&#8217;s  International Forensic Program examined the site for the UN in 2002<\/a>. Since  then, PHR has advocated for the mass graves to be protected, for the Afghan  Government, with the UN&#8217;s support, to launch a full investigation, and for the  Bush Administration and Congress to conduct a public inquiry into this potential  war crime.<\/p>\n<p>With these new revelations of alleged destruction of war crimes evidence in  Afghanistan\u2014which is itself a war crime\u2014PHR is again the leading voice <a title=\"PHR Asks NATO to Assist UN in Securing Dasht-e-Leili Mass Grave in Afghanistan\" href=\"http:\/\/afghanistan.phrblog.org\/2008\/12\/15\/phr-asks-nato-to-assist-un-in-securing-dasht-e-leili-mass-grave-in-afghanistan\/\">calling for NATO to support  Afghan forces in protecting the site<\/a>, and for <a title=\"PHR Calls for Probe into Removal of Mass Grave in Afghanistan\" href=\"http:\/\/afghanistan.phrblog.org\/2008\/12\/12\/phr-calls-for-probe-into-removal-of-mass-grave-in-afghanistan\/\">Afghan, US, and UN officials  to launch a comprehensive investigation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Our investigation of war crimes at Dasht-e-Leili continues, with more  developments yet to come.
