{"id":498,"date":"2004-05-17T05:46:25","date_gmt":"2004-05-17T09:46:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/karmalised.com\/wordpress\/?p=498"},"modified":"2004-05-17T05:46:25","modified_gmt":"2004-05-17T09:46:25","slug":"making-the-headlines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/karmalised.com\/?p=498","title":{"rendered":"Making the headlines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bernard Lewis during his presentation at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.booktv.org\/feature\/index.asp?segID=4565&#038;schedID=269\">carried by C-Span<\/a> remarked that media in the Middle East is Soviet-style censorship doomed to failure.<\/p>\n<p>I gathered from his comments he considers U.S. attempts to establish news services in Middle Eastern markets to be sorely needed channels of truth amidst reprehensible waves of disinformation.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder if Lewis would consider the non-reporting of this item censorship?  On MSNBC yesterday <a href=\"http:\/\/kurtnimmo.com\/archives\/00000118.html\">State Dept. press aide Emily Miller <\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzflash.com\/buzzscripts\/buzz.dll\/content\">yanked the camera away from Colin Powell<\/a> during his appearance on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/4992558\/\"><i>Meet the Press<\/i><\/a> after Tim Russert asked a question concerning WMD in Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nationworld\/world\/la-fg-powell17may17,1,6190580.story?coll=la-headlines-world\"><i>LA Times<\/i><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/seattletimes.nwsource.com\/html\/nationworld\/2001931010_iraqdig17.html\"><i>The Seattle Times<\/i><\/a> report the appearance but fail to note this remarkable attempt to direct the show.  It&#8217;s not appearing as a headline on <a href=\"http:\/\/news.google.com\/\">Google News<\/a>.  Shouldn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll gladly update in the coming days, weeks and months should any follow-ups appear and I must admit to wondering with George and Rummy boasting they don&#8217;t bother to read newspapers what do these publications fear?<\/p>\n<p>And what would Lewis say of a country whose leaders have such a low opinion of their most prominent journalists and publications they ignore them?
