Gen. William Boykin<\/a> could be at the center of the controversy. Rumsfeld has permitted Boykin to remain head of military intelligence, despite last year touching off a firestorm by giving speeches in uniform <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2003\/US\/10\/16\/rumsfeld.boykin.ap\/\">referring to the war on terrorism in religious terms<\/a>. Boykin said America was fighting the war on terrorism because &#8220;we&#8217;re a Christian nation, and the enemy is a guy named Satan.&#8221; He also said that while fighting a Muslim warlord in Somalia, he &#8220;knew that my god was a real god and his was an idol.&#8221; Senators were told yesterday that Boykin &#8220;briefed a top Pentagon civilian official last summer on ways military interrogators could gain more intelligence from Iraqi prisoners.&#8221; Critics have suggested those recommendations &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/newsitems\/s1106865.htm\">amounted to a senior-level go-ahead for the sexual and physical abuse of prisoners<\/a>.&#8221; As one former military intelligence official said, &#8220;Somewhere at the bottom of this you&#8217;ll find Cambone and his deputy, Boykin.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.juancole.com\/2004_05_01_juancole_archive.html#108434255369346845\">Juan Cole<\/a> on why he thinks <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A18916-2004May11.html\">Maj. Gen. Antonio Taguba<\/a>&#8216;s testimony differs from that of the Pentagon&#8217;s undersecretary of intelligence Stephen Cambone regarding who was in charge of the military police.<\/p>\n<p>The Joe McCarthy brigade over at <i>The Free Republic<\/i> aren&#8217;t showing any signs of remorse that an &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.freerepublic.com\/focus\/f-news\/1092851\/posts\">enemies list<\/a>&#8221; posted there on 3-7-04 in order to incite readers to harass and inflict harm upon the signatories included the name of Michael Berg and the affiliate he named, Prometheus Methods Tower Service, Inc.  Berg is the father of Nick Berg the U.S. civilian who was savagely decapitated in Iraq in the story and film released this week. <\/p>\n<p>Mid-thread comments:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Hi Doug! Good hard work! As I see it, this is a free speech issue. If these useful idiots want to ID themselves as useful idiots, they have that right. He will blame the president.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and he has.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/newsflash\/pa\/index.ssf?\/base\/news-16\/108430077760820.xml\"><b>Pa. family angry with American government over son&#8217;s brutal death<\/b><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Excerpt:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Michael Berg lashed out at the U.S. military and Bush administration, saying his son might still be alive had he not been detained by U.S. officials in Iraq without being charged and without access to a lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>Nick Berg, a small telecommunications business owner, spoke to his parents on March 24 and told them he would return home on March 30. But Berg was detained by Iraqi police at a checkpoint in Mosul on March 24. He was turned over to U.S. officials and detained for 13 days.<\/p>\n<p>His father, Michael, said his son wasn&#8217;t allowed to make phone calls or contact a lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>FBI agents visited Berg&#8217;s parents in West Chester on March 31 and told the family they were trying to confirm their son&#8217;s identity. On April 5, the Bergs filed suit in federal court in Philadelphia, contending that their son was being held illegally by the U.S. military. The next day Berg was released. He told his parents he hadn&#8217;t been mistreated.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Berg said he blamed the U.S. government for creating circumstances that led to his son&#8217;s death. He said if his son hadn&#8217;t been detained for so long, he might have been able to leave the country before the violence worsened.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><u>Updated @ 1:01PM:<\/u><\/p>\n<p><b>U.S. Denies Holding Beheading Victim <\/b><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/story.news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story&#038;cid=514&#038;e=2&#038;u=\/ap\/20040512\/ap_on_re_mi_ea\/iraq_33\">By ROBERT H.
