This time, it’s more than a rumor\u2026<\/font>

The shooting has already started in the Persian Gulf \u2013 and chances are we’ll be at war with Iran before President Bush’s term is up. An American ship under contract with the U.S. Navy \u2013 the Western Venture \u2013 claims it was in international waters when Iranian speedboats approached and failed to answer radio calls. Shots were fired on the American side. Iran denies the whole thing. Yet you’ll recall that in the last incident, involving the capture of British sailors, the story about being in international waters was the same \u2013 except, it turns out, they weren’t in international waters, but in disputed waters, just as we speculated in this space. There’s no reason to expect anything different this time. Clearly, the U.S. and Britain are trying to trigger a new conflict with the most brazen provocations, and they don’t really care how it happens \u2013 only that it does. <\/p>\n

AMERICANS have learned to take with a grain of salt much of the rhetoric in a campaign like the current Democratic donnybrook between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Still, there are some red lines that should never be crossed. Clinton did so Tuesday morning, the day of the Pennsylvania primary, when she told ABC’s “Good Morning America” that, if she were president, she would “totally obliterate” Iran if Iran attacked Israel.<\/p>\n

This foolish and dangerous threat was muted in domestic media coverage. But it reverberated in headlines around the world.<\/p>\n
