WASHINGTON (Reuters<\/a>) – Two Republican U.S. congressmen just back from a trip to Iraq urged President Bush on Tuesday to accept an independent panel to audit U.S. operations there, and called on him to acknowledge mistakes that they said set back Iraq’s recovery by months.<\/p>\n

Reps. Frank Wolf of Virginia and Christopher Shays of Connecticut also urged the administration to give Iraqis a bigger voice in rebuilding their own country, and to show more “humility” in sharing power and being open to differing ideas.<\/p>\n

Wolf and Shays, who said they believed they were the only congressmen to travel in Iraq outside U.S. military auspices, also said Bush should redouble efforts to get more international help in Iraq including creating an alliance modeled on NATO to develop Iraq’s law enforcement.<\/p>\n

They also called on him to appoint a special envoy — possibly former President George H.W. Bush — to focus on the Arab-Israeli conflict, saying Mideast peace was key to stemming terrorism worldwide.<\/p>\n

Shays said the administration “wasted two months” after the major conflict in Iraq, and the administration should “acknowledge that, be upfront about miscalculations. It gives more validity to what you say afterward because people know you’re speaking honestly.”<\/p><\/div>\n

Bush…honest…ha ha. Bush lives by a different set of rules than the peons. We need to be lied to because we don’t know what’s good for us, right?<\/p>\n

Ted Koppel asked Dean during the New Hampshire debate ‘is there ever a reason to lie’ to which the idiot Dean stammered something to the effect ‘if lives are at risk’.<\/p>\n

Really. What exactly is that supposed to mean? Didn’t he just give George an out should he ever fess up to lying about Iraq…couldn’t he say he felt ‘American lives were in danger’…Ooops. Sorry they weren’t, but my intentions were honorable.<\/p>\n

Dean doesn’t have what it takes to go up against George. Karl has probably been drilling him daily on how to slam Ho Ho for every contradiction he’s ever made. It won’t matter if the insults are out of context and have no relationship to a bigger truth. The dialogue will be framed in rhetorical one-upmanship and in those heated exchanges the one in power wins by default.<\/p>\n

Thankfully there are some Republicans finally stepping up to the plate to take on George and his follies because the Democrats so far have failed miserably and I don’t see the situation improving.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
