The recently alleged govt. vote rigging<\/a> in Georgia’s Nov. 2nd parliamentary election has the former Soviet Republic ‘sliding into chaos’<\/a> and President Eduard Shevardnadze fleeing from its capital.<\/p>\n

Outside the capital, Tbilisi, there were reports on Monday of security forces beating opposition supporters, gunmen roaming towns unchecked by the police and isolated reports of shootings. <\/p>\n

The announcement that thousands of soldiers were returning to Tbilisi from the north of the country also fuelled fears of armed conflict. Unrest has gripped Georgia since parliamentary elections were held more than a week ago. The Defence Minister has said the situation is “practically out of control”.<\/p>\n

Opposition leaders have accused Mr Shevardnadze, president Mikhail Gorbachev’s foreign minister during the collapse of the former Soviet Union, of poll-fixing to rob them of victory.<\/i><\/p>\n

The Telegraph also mentions the pipeline:<\/p>\n

Georgia’s political stability matters to the West, as it has strategic and economic interests there.<\/p>\n

A pipeline is being built from neighbouring Azerbaijan through Georgia to Turkey to take Caspian oil to the Mediterranean Sea.<\/i><\/p>\n

Correction 11\/14: In my hurry to post this, I mistakenly credited the Telegraph with mentioning the pipeline. In fact, as the article which appears on smh.com.au plainly indicates, Agence France-Presse and Reuters were also listed as sources, or it may have come from the journalist who wrote the report as well.<\/p>\n
