The general effect on the Iraqi population amounts to a massive war crime, writes Bert De Belder<a href=\"http:\/\/weekly.ahram.org.eg\/2007\/839\/re10.htm#1\">*<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Iraq&#8217;s health status, four years into the occupation, is nothing short of disastrous. Iraq&#8217;s health index has deteriorated to a level not seen since the 1950s, says Joseph Chamie, former director of the United Nations Population Division and an Iraq specialist. People&#8217;s health status is determined by social, economic and environmental factors much more than by the availability of healthcare.
