Laura Bush hasn’t been in the news much since she postponed a WH symposium on poetry<\/a> which effectively banned antiwar poets from participating in it.<\/p>\n

There have been sightings of her here and there. When George dropped Barney on his head she was there<\/a> seeming, at least in this picture, not particularly concerned about Barney’s neck. Save those rare exceptions when she’s been stirred to simmering disgust by a derogatory news item about her hubby, Laura has always seemed flat to me.<\/p>\n

Last week Laura popped up at the opening session of UNESCO<\/a> with a list of demands that must be met before the U.S. would rejoin including an immediate seat on the executive council which caused Greece, Luxembourg, Portugal, and Monaco to withdraw their candidatures to ensure it.<\/p>\n

Some felt her presence as a special representative to the general assembly an affront in itself citing her lack of ‘experience of cultural, educational, or scientific policymaking’<\/i> conveyed disdain for the conference.<\/p>\n

Considering all of this and her failure as First Lady to promote new and innovative programs it’s difficult for me to get excited by news of Laura playing host to the third annual National Book Festival this weekend<\/i>.<\/a><\/p>\n

The article is noteworthy as it includes a poem by George inspired by Laura’s recent travels abroad which provides perhaps a glimpse into the dynamics of their marriage, and the revelation that Laura is not flat at all.<\/p>\n

“Roses are red\/Violets are blue\/Oh my, lump in the bed\/How I’ve missed you.”<\/p>\n

“Roses are redder\/Bluer am I\/Seeing you kissed by that charming French guy.”<\/p>\n
