In recent months, al-Zarqawi has stopped beheading his victims, but he has not let up in his campaign against the Shia. Upon hearing the news of al-Zarqawi’s death, bin Laden and al-Zawahiri likely will release audiotapes indicating their joy that al-Zarqawi has finally received what he has always wanted?martyrdom at the hand of the infidels.<\/p>\n

But privately, they may hope that al-Zarqawi’s successor in Iraq is more amenable to taking directions from al Qaeda central, which is located somewhere on the Afghan-Pakistan border. Viewed this way, al-Zarqawi’s death could bring bin Laden some relief.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What the Americans had always lacked was someone inside Zarqawi’s network, Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia – someone trusted enough to show the Americans where he was.<\/p>\n

According to a Pentagon official, the Americans finally got one.<\/p>\n

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because details of the raid are classified, said that an Iraqi informant inside Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia provided the critical piece of intelligence about Rahman’s meeting with Zarqawi.<\/p>\n

The source’s identity was not clear. Nor was it clear how that source was able to pinpoint Zarqawi’s location without getting killed himself.<\/p>\n

In a news release on Thursday morning, U.S. military commanders hinted strongly that a member of Zarqawi’s inner circle had pointed the way.<\/p>\n

“Tips and intelligence from Iraqi senior leaders from his network led forces to al-Zarqawi,” the news release said.<\/p>\n

Iraqi officials confirmed that Zarqawi had indeed been sold out by one of his own.<\/p>\n

“We have managed to infiltrate this organization,” said Mowaffak al-Rubiae, Iraq’s national security adviser.<\/p>\n

In an interview, a Jordanian official close to the investigation said that the mission that killed Zarqawi was a joint operation conducted by the Americans and Jordanian intelligence. The source inside Zarqawi’s group, the Jordanian official said, had been cultivated at least in part by Jordanian intelligence agents.<\/p>\n
