One of his bodyguards was killed and 10 others were wounded in the blast.”

According to Gaza Blast Stokes Hamas-Fatah Tensions (pre–post edit), Tarek Abu Rajab was stabilised in a Palestinian hospital then taken to the Israel-Gaza border, where an Israeli ambulance waited to take him immediately to an Israeli hospital for further treatment.

That same article includes this:

“Hours after the explosion, Israeli warplanes fired missiles at a car in Gaza City and killed Mohammed Dadouh, top military commander of the small militant group Islamic Jihad, Palestinian officials said. Three others traveling in a car behind Dadouh’s ? a mother, her 5-year-old son and the child’s grandmother ? also were killed.”

Three-year-old Mariyah Amin, also a passenger in the car, had her spinal cord severed by shrapnel from the blast. She will be on a respirator for the rest of her life.

It’s obvious why Israel would be interested in nursing Rajab back to health when it cares not at all about Palestinian civilians they maim and kill. But how is it that Israeli intelligence can pinpoint the car routes of people like Dadouh yet leafleteers on Gaza streets and al Qaeda streaming into Palestine have escaped their interventions? It’s ridiculous. Just as fantastic is Olmert’s claim yesterday that Iran is only months away from being able to manufacture a nuclear weapon.

The previously unheard of group, al-Qaida in Palestine, has threatened Mahmoud Abbas and other Fatah officials.

Previously unheard of al Qaeda groups in Palestine seem to be forming by the minute. On 30 April 2006 it was reported that Mahmoud Abbas had increased personal security around his villa:

The latest measures were taken after a hitherto unknown group calling itself al-Tawhid and Jihad [Unification and Holy War] distributed leaflets in the Gaza Strip threatening to kill a number of senior officials belonging to Abbas’s Fatah party.

This is the first time that the group, which is believed to be headed by Jordanian arch-terrorist Abu Musab Zarqawi, has issued a leaflet in Gaza, indicating that al-Qaida elements had begun operating in the area.

The Gun or the Ballot Box?
Hamas or Al Qaeda?
By CLANCY CHASSAY
1/2 April 2006 Counterpunch

Though Hamas is considered a terrorist organization by the US and EU for its attacks on Israel, some believe the success of Hamas’ electoral participation could reduce regional support for groups like Al Qaeda which reject popular participation in government.

They describe a growing schism between reform-minded Islamists like Hamas and its parent group the Muslim Brotherhood, who seek to Islamize their societies through the democratic process, and those, such as Al-Qaeda, who refuse the democratic political system altogether, attempting to force a radical transformation through the use of violence.

Alistair Crooke, a former British intelligence officer and security advisor to EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana, believes there is now real animosity between the two Islamist currents.

“I think it’s a war; it’s more than just a growing division, we’re talking about a fundamental struggle for the future of Islam.”

Hamas fits none of the criteria for an alliance with al Qaeda that’s somehow managed to penetrate Israeli security and set-up shop in Palestine just as Olmert is travelling to Washington to seek financing for Ariel Sharon’s vision for a Greater Israel. At least Olmert’s trip prompted him to finally release some of the revenues that Israel has been unjustly withholding as Palestinians died from lack of medicine. Why would Olmert release any of the funds if, as he said, talk of a humanitarian crisis in Palestine is total propaganda?
