Most Americans don’t know what the word means, or are aware that 58 years ago, more than 700,000 Palestinians were driven from their ancestral homes by Jewish forces and have never been allowed to return. 6,536,000 Palestinians are refugees today. 400,000 are crowded into 12 Lebanon camps, some of which resemble military camps, where they are fenced off from the outside world and restricted by Lebanese soldiers. Lebanon prohibits new construction to accommodate the growing population, denies Palestinians basic rights to work or own property, and refuses to address the abject poverty and horrendous living conditions that 58-years of “temporary status” has wrought. The ongoing suffering of the Palestinian people extends beyond Lebanon and the international community has failed them at every turn.

In Israel today, the High Court of Justice upheld a law “that only Palestinian women over the age of 25 and men over 35 are eligible to join their families in Israel, and eventually receive citizenship.” Somewhere in Israel tonight there is a child writing in a diary. How many years must pass before the world is “ready” to read it?

Nakba is a catastrophe that has yet to be remembered in a museum, it’s yearly passage is never splashed across the front pages of global newspapers. There are no moments of silence for the victims but silence aplenty as Palestinians continue to be robbed of their land and livelihoods. Nakba is the dirty little secret shared by respected humanitarians and cut-throat politicians who do not rush to podiums to declare never again, but do rush to mitigate the grotesque nature of the crimes and fund the ongoing ethnic cleansing. Just one more time, then never again? But isn’t that what all the war criminals say?

Since May 3rd, the Institute for Middle East Understanding has been running a campaign to bring awareness to the Nakba, and now have an impressive collection of statistics, historical information, and survivor profiles. Tomorrow the site will be featuring the thoughts of seven prominent Palestinians along with other information that’s been gathered over the past two weeks.
