{"id":14287,"date":"2010-06-21T13:24:03","date_gmt":"2010-06-21T19:24:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/karmalised.com\/?p=14287"},"modified":"2010-06-21T13:24:03","modified_gmt":"2010-06-21T19:24:03","slug":"ijdh-and-bai-attend-the-u-s-social-forum-in-detroit-june-22-26","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/karmalised.com\/?p=14287","title":{"rendered":"IJDH and BAI attend the U.S. Social Forum in Detroit (June 22-26)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti<br \/>\n21 June 2010<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This year, the <a href=\"http:\/\/ijdh.org\">Institute for Justice &amp; Democracy in  Haiti<\/a> (IJDH)\u00a0will bring its fight for  human rights in Haiti to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/organize.ussf2010.org\/\">U.S. Social  Forum<\/a> (USSF) in Detroit, Michigan from June  22-26.\u00a0 The Social Forum is an opportunity to collaborate with our allies, build new relationships, and promote awareness about our work to bring justice to Haiti\u2019s poor majority.\u00a0We have been carrying out this work across the globe &#8211;  two weeks ago we were in Geneva to support the leader of a partner grassroots  Haitian women&#8217;s organization as she\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ijdh.org\/archives\/12441\">testified<\/a> before the United Nations Human Rights Council\u00a0on  gender-based violence in Haiti. Last week we were in Paris, two weeks from now we will be in New York City attending the UN Economic and Social Council\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/ecosoc\/substantivesession\/\">session<\/a>, and we will be in Washington DC for a Congressional briefing later in July.\u00a0We are doing everything we can to keep Haiti on the  world&#8217;s radar screen and bring voices of earthquake victims and grassroots groups to places where decisions about their lives are being made.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ijdh.org\/about\/staff#mario\">Mario Joseph,  Av.<\/a>, the managing attorney at IJDH\u2019s sister  organization the <a href=\"http:\/\/ijdh.org\/about\/bai\">Bureau des Avocats  Internationaux<\/a>, will be a featured  speaker on two panel discussions at the USSF:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/organize.ussf2010.org\/ws\/local-resistance-global-strategies-connecting-struggles-americas\"><strong>Local  resistance, global strategies: Connecting the struggles in the  Americas<\/strong><\/a><strong>:<\/strong> Afro-descendant communities in Colombia, internally  displaced in New Orleans, militarized communities in Haiti and the Caribbean,  will present their plights and struggles, and open the discussion about  perspectives of resistance that no longer can be disconnected one from the  other.\u00a0<em>Thursday, June 24, 2010, 10am-12pm, Cobo Hall,  W2-62.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/organize.ussf2010.org\/ws\/mobilizing-across-diaspora-change-prospects-latin-america-and-caribbean\">The  Battle for Haiti: Reconstruction or Recolonization?<\/a>: <\/strong>A\u00a0brief overview of  current situation in Haiti, concrete policy recommendations and open dialogue to  prioritize organizing strategies across the U.S. in solidarity with civil  society partners in Haiti and throughout the Haitian Diaspora.\u00a0We must make sure our  support is based upon respect for human rights, respect for international  standards on humanitarian relief and the treatment of internally displaced  people, and respect for economic and labor rights.\u00a0<em>Thursday, June 24,  2010, 3:30-5:30pm, Cobo Hall, D3-23.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mr. Joseph, named \u201cHaiti\u2019s most  prominent human rights lawyer\u201d by the New York Times, will offer his unique  perspective on conditions on the ground in Haiti today, with particular focus on  the need for fair elections and a coordinated and effective response to the  skyrocketing incidence of rape and other gender-based violence in Haiti\u2019s  internally displaced persons\u2019 camps.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ijdh.org\/about\/staff#nicole\">Nicole Phillips, Esq<\/a>. will also represent IJDH at the USSF, bringing her  expertise on the right to housing in Haiti and relating her current efforts  against unlawful forced evictions from internally displaced persons camps in  Haiti.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you  are in the area, we hope to see you in Detroit.
