Security Council prepares to debate Iran&#8217;s nuclear ambitions&#8211;perhaps as early as next week&#8211;Bush Administration officials are readying a new intelligence briefing for council members on Tehran&#8217;s weapons programs. It will rely mainly on circumstantial evidence, much of it from documents found on a laptop purportedly purloined from an Iranian nuclear engineer and obtained by the CIA in 2004. U.S. officials insist the material is strong but concede they have no smoking gun.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>A report issued last week by Mohamed ElBaradei, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), says Iranian officials have dismissed a number of the laptop documents as fabricated.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I wonder if this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/images\/issues\/200412\/2004-12-fallows-iran.pdf\">power point<\/a> (pdf <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/doc\/200412\/fallows\/2\">via<\/a>) was simply given a makeover.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.karmalised.com\/archives\/000219.html\">In 2003<\/a>, Paul Craig Roberts <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washtimes.com\/commentary\/20031029-084551-5486r.htm\">wrote<\/a>, &#8221; For the neoconservatives, the advantage of a nuclear over a conventional attack is that the former solves the manpower problem and, by obliterating the target, conveniently rules out discovering the embarrassing fact of nonexistent WMD.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It appears <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalsecurity.org\/org\/news\/2005\/050313-iran-aim.htm\">all that remains<\/a> is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/justin\/?articleid=8663\">deciding on the targets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Even if tactical nukes aren&#8217;t used there could <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heatherwokusch.com\/\">still be nuclear fallout<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The most horrific impact of a US assault on Iran, of course, would be the potentially catastrophic number of casualties. The Oxford Research Group predicted that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/main.jhtml?xml=\/news\/2006\/02\/13\/wiran13.xml&#038;sSheet=\/news\/2006\/02\/13\/ixworld.html\">up to 10,000 people would die<\/a> if the US bombed Iran&#8217;s nuclear sites, and that an attack on the Bushehr nuclear reactor could send a radioactive cloud over the Gulf. If the US uses nuclear weapons, such as earth-penetrating &#8220;bunker buster&#8221; bombs, radioactive fallout would become even more disastrous.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>10,000 or more deaths and the best intelligence provides &#8220;no smoking gun.&#8221;  Mass murder.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfordresearchgroup.org.uk\/home.htm\">Oxford Research Group<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As the crisis over Iran&#8217;s nuclear programme deepens, Oxford Research Group has published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfordresearchgroup.org.uk\/publications\/briefings\/IranConsequences.htm\">Iran: Consequences of a War<\/a> by Professor Paul Rogers.
