Abdul Bari Atwan: British justice is exposed as a sham

Britain’s Foreign Secretary William Hague received Tzipi Livni in his office at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office this week. The former Israeli Foreign Minister was welcomed warmly even though she is now simply the leader of the opposition in Israel. It was a black day in the history of British justice and a huge insult to the memory of the 1,400 Palestinian victims of Israel’s brutal military assault on the besieged Gaza Strip in 2008/9; more than a third of those killed were children and women; many were incinerated by white phosphorous bombs – which are prohibited internationally – dropped by Israeli soldiers; all were killed while Hague’s guest, Tzipi Livni, was Foreign Minister and a key member of Israel’s “war cabinet”.

The UN’s Goldstone Report claimed that Livni shares responsibility for war crimes and possibly crimes against humanity in Gaza; her hands have the blood of innocents on them. By giving her the red carpet treatment, the British government was basically giving official endorsement to those crimes and providing legal cover for the criminals.

Britain’s legal system has long been a source of pride for the country, its people and its democracy because of the independence of the judiciary from the executive. The present government, however, which is completely biased in favour of Israel and its crimes, bent to pressure from the Israelis and amended the law, removing legal power from judges and rendering the justice system both selective and politicised. This is a moral crime of the highest order.

Watch: Israeli police brutalizing Palestinian man

by Jalal Abukhater on Thu, 10/06/2011 – 22:33

This video caught my attention this afternoon, but it sure isn’t an isolated incident against Palestinians in Israel.

In the video, Israeli police appear to be attacking and brutalizing a Palestinian man in Jaffa in order to evict him and his family from a vacant property in which they sheltered.

Joseph Stiglitz and Jeff Madrick @ #occupywallstreet Open Economic Forum

Uploaded to YouTube.com by on Oct 2, 2011

It was rather amazing how this just emerged in the middle of Zuccotti park AKA LIBERTY SQUARE. The “people’s mic” check occurred, and suddenly we were listening to two important economists of our time speak to the protestors.

Great point about bullhorns…

Stiglitz is one of the most frequently cited economists in the world. It was great to hear the two of them speak, informally, in this magical setting. All types of people were listening, many folks were recording sound and visuals. The rain had stopped and a question and answer session had followed.

A Child’s View from Gaza. 917 Washington Street, Oakland, CA. Currently on view.

A Child’s View from Gaza, a traveling exhibit of the artwork of Palestinian children living in the Gaza Strip, opened in downtown Oakland, California this week as scheduled, despite the fact that the Museum of Children’s Art in Oakland (MOCHA) canceled their agreement to house the project this Fall. After the news on September 8 that Zionist groups had successfully pressured MOCHA’s Board of Directors to cancel their commitment to host the exhibit, local sponsor Middle East Children’s Alliance (MECA) rallied the Bay Area and online community to stand together and “Say No to Censorship!”
