Israel fires missiles at Lebanon

Thu, 08 Jan 2009 07:22:39 GMT

Tel Aviv has launched five missiles at Lebanon claiming the assault was in retaliation to rocket attacks on northern Israeli towns.

According to Israeli officials four rockets landed on northern Israel early on Thursday, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Israeli Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the rockets landed around the town of Nahariya, 8 km (5 miles) south of the Lebanese border, leaving two people slightly injured. Tel Aviv claims the rockets were launched from southern Lebanon.

Lebanon’s Hezbollah, however, says it is not responsible for the alleged firing of rockets onto Israel from Lebanon.

Israel, Lebanon: Rockets Explode In Western Galilee
January 8, 2009 | 0640 GMT

Three Katyusha rockets launched from southern Lebanon exploded in northern Israel’s western Galilee early Jan. 8, Israeli media has reported. While Israel has been conducting a large-scale military offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, its northern front has — until now — remained quiet.

The primary suspect behind the rocket attacks will naturally be the radical Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah. It is unclear that Hezbollah would gain much from drawing Israel into a fight at this time, however.

‘Israel no match for Hezbollah’
Wed, 07 Jan 2009 15:14:44 GMT

In an exclusive interview with Press TV on Tuesday, former Lebanese President Emile Lahoud warned that once Israel is finished with Gaza, it would attack Lebanon in reprisal for its failure in the 33-day war.

“I’m sure that Israel thinking after Gaza would turn towards Lebanon, and after Lebanon it will take every Arab state one by one, and this is what some of the Lebanese as some Arab leaders are not thinking about,” said the former Lebanese president.

This is while Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was quoted as telling the French president Nicolas Sarkozy on Monday that “today Hamas and Tomorrow Hezbollah,” will come under attack.

An Israeli basketball team fled to the changing room Tuesday as hundreds of fist-pumping, chanting Turkish fans protested the violence in Gaza. Dorothy Naor writes:

At 6:00 PM Israel time I turned on the TV to BBC to learn the latest on Gaza, only to be shocked to the core: Israel bombed a UN school, where many people had gone for refuge. The video from the location was ghastly. At least 40 were killed in the attack—the numbers are likely to rise. This strike was the 2nd UN school hit today. And prior to that a house had been hit with at least 12 people in it killed, 7 of them children. The news is reminiscent of 2 years ago in Lebanon. Israel warned people to leave south Lebanon and then bombed them as they were trying to escape. For me one of the most indelibly imprinted and horrific acts was when Israel bombed a bus full of children trying to escape. Not one survived.

What political and/or economic considerations prevent the international community from slapping sanctions on Israel? What kind of country is this? What kind of army and air force? And the world is complicit!
