#FreedomWaves: Captains and passengers were badly treated by Israelis

6 November 2011

Greek captain of the Tahrir Giorgos Klontzas has confirmed the use of violence on him by the israeli soldiers during his interrogation in a interview he gave to www.Omniatv.com

He specifically reports that he was handcuffed on hands and feet , very tightly which created a blood circulation problem and that in order to make him give his fingerprints he was held by three soldiers and one was holding him in a strangling way almost suffocating him.

At one point they stuck two fingers in his eyes creating very strong pain. He said that he was very calm, he did not speak aggressively and that he just requested to see a lawyer… He also confirms that some activists were very badly treated.

Action Alert: BOATS SAILING NOW TO GAZA! SPREAD THE WORD.

ACT NOW!! BOATS SAILING NOW TO GAZA! SPREAD THE WORD.

Israel and the US outsourced the siege of Gaza to Athens last summer by preventing 8 boats in the Freedom Flotilla 2-Stay Human from sailing from Greek ports to Gaza. Despite this we were able to bring world-wide attention to the blockade of the Gaza Strip. Our efforts in Greece only fueled our determination to challenge the imprisonment of the people of Gaza. We said we would continue to sail and so we are!!!

At this moment, two boats are in international waters in the Mediterranean heading to Gaza. One boat, the Saoirse from Ireland, includes parliamentarians among its passengers. The other, the Tahrir, carries representatives from Canada, the U.S., Australia, and Palestine. The U.S. Representative on the Tahrir, Kit Kittredge, was a passenger on the U.S. Boat to Gaza, The Audacity of Hope mission in Athens in July. A journalist from Democracy Now is on the Tahrir also. Civil society organizations in Gaza await their arrival, and look forward to the delivery of letters collected from thousands of U.S. supporters in the To Gaza With Love campaign.

We need your help to make this mission a success. Please take these actions immediately.

1. Check these websites for updates: US to Gaza, Irish Ship to Gaza and Canadian Boat to Gaza, watch or listen to Democracy Now for live coverage from the Tahrir. Look for twitter hashtag #Freedomwaves.

2. Spread the word far and wide – send this alert to your contacts.

IPA: Greek Government “Blackmailing” Public

Tuesday, November 1, 2011
Institute for Public Accuracy

COSTAS PANAYOTAKIS:
Panayotakis is associate professor of sociology at the New York City College of Technology at CUNY and author of the forthcoming book “Remaking Scarcity: From Capitalist Inefficiency to Economic Democracy.” He said today: “Faced with escalating opposition and resistance to the austerity measures it has imposed on the Greek population ever since the IMF and EU-backed bailout 18 months ago, the Greek government has announced a referendum on the latest European deal, which includes a new bailout for Greece as well as a voluntary 50 percent haircut for the country’s privately held debt. The fact that a second bailout has become necessary is a sign of the first bailout’s failure, thus further fueling the feeling of the Greek public that its sacrifices are leading to nowhere. As a poll and a wave of protests late last week showed, people’s first reaction to the new deal is not positive, so the Greek government is desperately trying to cling to power by blackmailing citizens that, if they don’t approve the deal and the new austerity measures it will imply, Greece will have to declare bankruptcy and leave the eurozone. This latest development has caught officials and observers outside Greece by surprise, leading to new economic volatility and making the European deal announced last week even more shaky than it already was.”
