AT-TUWANI BLOG: Running for their lives

by Sam Nichols

A panting child arrives at our door, trying to explain what has happened. Because of the language barrier, I struggle to gather the gist of the story. I understand the settlers have done something to the sheep, so we grab our cameras and head out the door. While walking, I continue to get the details of what has happened.

It’s not a new story—something similar happens every week in this village—but it still grips you with the force of something novel. Masked settlers had come charging out of the bushes. Running towards the Palestinian shepherds and sheep, they smacked the sheep with large sticks and threw large stones at the sheep. The Palestinians, two brothers in elementary school, literally ran for their lives.

A few weeks ago, settlers captured these two boys, took them into the confines of the settlement, and beat them with fists and sticks. (See http://www.cpt.org/cptnet/2009/04/05/tuwani-masked-settlers-beat-three-palestinian-children-shoot-palestinian-shepherds.)

In the film, “In the Spider’s Web”, an Israeli soldier threatens to kill a donkey if it’s seen at the checkpoint again. It appears that slaughtering donkeys is a regular form of amusement for the sociopaths.

Jonathan Cook: How Many Secret Prisons Does Israel Have?

By Jonathan Cook, Counterpunch, 18 May 2009

The United Nation’s watchdog on torture has criticised Israel for refusing to allow inspections at a secret prison, dubbed by critics as “Israel’s Guantanamo Bay”, and demanded to know if more such clandestine detention camps are operating.

In a report published on Friday, the Committee Against Torture requested that Israel identify the location of the camp, officially referred to as “Facility 1391”, and allow access to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Findings from Israeli human rights groups show that the prison has in the past been used to hold Arab and Muslim prisoners, including Palestinians, and that routine torture and physical abuse were carried out by interrogators.

The UN committee’s panel of 10 independent experts also found credible the submissions from Israeli groups that Palestinian detainees are systematically tortured despite the banning of such practices by the Israeli Supreme Court in 1999.

June 2, 2009

Obama is scheduled to meet with King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia on Wednesday and to make a speech in Cairo on Thursday.

AMJAD SHAWA
Shawa, the Palestinian Non-Governmental Organization Network coordinator for Gaza, said today: “Gaza is still under siege — there’s been no real movement from the U.S. to pressure Israel to allow the people in Gaza to reconstruct after the bombing campaign of a few months ago. It’s virtually impossible to get goods in or out.”

ANN WRIGHT, PAM RASMUSSEN

Col. Wright is co-leader of the delegation. She is a retired U.S. Army colonel and a former U.S. diplomat who resigned in 2003 in opposition to the Iraq war. Wright said today:  “If President Obama can, at the last minute, add a visit to Saudi Arabia to have a private dinner with the King, then he certainly can go to Gaza.”
