Israel stages night-time Ramallah raid to arrest an international solidarity activist

Popular Struggle Coordination Committee
Press release
11 January 2010

The raid was conducted to apprehend Eva Nováková, a Czech citizen, who has been the International Solidarity Movement‘s media coordinator for the past few weeks. The raid was held despite a recent statement by president Mahmoud Abbas, who said the PA is considering scaling back security ties with Israel over area A operations.

Israeli soldiers raided the Ramallah home of Eva Nováková tonight at 3 am near the Manara square. The operation to apprehend Nováková, the ISM’s media coordinator in past few weeks, was carried out by a force of both soldiers and members of the “Oz” immigration police unit. During the raid, the army occupied a number of rooftops at a location adjacent to the Palestinian Police Ramallah headquarters. She is currently being held in Givon detention center awaiting deportation to the Czech Republic.

FreeGaza.org: ‘We’re Sailing Again – Join Us!’

Written by Free Gaza Team | 11 January 2010

This spring, the Free Gaza Movement is sending at least six boats to Gaza to break Israel’s illegal blockade on 1.5 million Palestinians. This blockade constitutes an act of collective punishment, a crime prohibited under international humanitarian law. Gaza’s man-made and internationally perpetuated crisis is set to deepen as Egypt builds an Iron wall 30 meters deep and 20 meters high on the southern Rafah border, closing off the final route for Palestinians to get basic supplies.

The urgency of breaking the blockade grows by the day as Palestinians living in this prison are denied their most basic rights.

medialens: Were Afghan children executed by US-led forces? And why aren’t the media interested?

medialens.org
11 January 2010

Ignoring or downplaying Western crimes is a standard feature of the corporate Western media. On rare occasions when a broadcaster or newspaper breaks ranks and reports ‘our’ crimes honestly, it is instructive to observe the response from the rest of the media. Do they follow suit, perhaps digging deeper for details, devoting space to profiles of the victims and interviews with grieving relatives, humanising all concerned? Do they put the crimes in perspective as the inevitable consequence of rapacious Western power? Or do they look away?

One such case is a report that American-led troops dragged Afghan children from their beds and shot them during a night raid on December 27 last year, leaving ten people dead. Afghan government investigators said that eight of the dead were schoolchildren, and that some of them had been handcuffed before being killed. Kabul-based Times correspondent Jerome Starkey reported the shocking accusations about the joint US-Afghan operation. But the rest of the UK news media have buried the report.

Vijay Raghavan: Impressions of Israeli Executions in the West Bank

If Americans Knew
10 January 2010

Dear Friends,

Following is a superb and astonishing example of citizen journalism. An American family from Danville, California was traveling in the Holy Land over the Christmas holidays. By happenstance they were in Nablus only hours after three Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces — by all indications, in cold blood.

This incident is causing controversy in Israel, with some Israelis calling for an investigation. Below is the first-hand account by this American family describing what they learned on the scene.

We feel this information should be sent out widely and that American media, US officials, and Israeli investigators should interview the author. We suggest that those of you who live in California tell your local media and Congressional representatives about this first-hand information and ask for an investigation.
