Chief Justice Scalia?

Aggle, who’s made some very interesting points of his own, links to Election Law and Rick Hansen’s post on why rational Democrats could support the nomination of Scalia to the Chief Justice position.

Wow, thanks a lot! I appreciate the linkage, m’dear.

I’d be more than interested to hear your thoughts on the subject, Di.

I must admit that I’m one of the “great unwashed” who think that Scalia’s opinions are good stuff. So, I wouldn’t mind at all seeing him be the Chief.

I disagree somewhat with Hasen about the strength of a Chief Justice Scalia. I think he’s got more influence with the fringe-conservatives on the Court (Kennedy, O’Connor) than that, and there’s something to be said about the occasional browbeating of them durn liberal Justices.

I’ll just say this, you folks on the left need to be REALLY sure you want this before it happens. Simply put, I wouldn’t put it past ol’ Georgie to be crossing his fingers when he promises to appoint a moderate to fill Scalia’s Associate Justice seat.

Scalia champions the fringe, those who intend to tear down the wall between church and state, discriminate against homosexuals, interfere with states’ rights by misrepresenting the power of the feds in criminalising medicinal pot, capitol punishment for all, yada, yada…

He does this all whilst behaving in his personal life as if he is above the ethical constraints that govern mere mortals.

Appointing Scalia to Chief Justice is akin to appointing a consigliere to the position.

If Antonin Scalia were a Catholic priest, he’d likely excommunicate a woman for divorcing her abusive husband, whilst fondling her son in the sanctuary.
