Bernard Keane: Funding illegal Israeli settlements? Priceless.

by Bernard Keane

Visa, Mastercard and PayPal all enable donations to be made to US-registered groups funding illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank in defiance of international law.

It appears at least one of the major credit cards also enables donations to an extremist Jewish group that has placed a bounty on the lives of Palestinians.

All three have in the last week ceased enabling donations to WikiLeaks. Neither Mastercard nor Visa have explained the basis for their decision to do so. PayPal has backed away from its initial claim that the US State Department told PayPal WikiLeaks had broken the law after the claim was discredited. This is the third occasion on which PayPal has suspended payment services for WikiLeaks.

  1. Sam Dragon says:

Yeah! Where do I sign up?

    Go Israel!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Stan says:

So what extremist Israeli groups are you talking about? As this post is currently written, it is nothing more than assertion. I’m not saying you are wrong, but there is no reason to believe one way or the other without at least a name.

Also, what is the international law you are talking about?

  3. Diane Warth says:

Stan – If you read the material you’re dispatched to spam before commenting on it you might not look so ignorant – then again, perhaps not.

  4. Anonymust says:

    Yeah, STAN! Slow your role.

  5. Nels Nelson says:

Yeah, Stan. Read the rest of the article. I’ll give you a pass on this one though. I thought the same thing as you, until I noticed the click through link, and read the actual article.

Bad website design. Diane Warth, you should read Kottke’s post on single-page articles, and get rid of your click-through links.

  6. Nim says:

Diane, if you flagged more of the racist propaganda as spam before accepting it as fact you might not look so ignorant – then again, perhaps not.

  7. rlap says:

wow. diane, your response to stan’s comment was incredibly disproportionate. he does not look ignorant for asking.
i personally had to look multiple times before i saw a link to the full article.

    here it is stan http://www.crikey.com.au/2010/12/13/funding-illegal-israeli-settlements-priceless/

    I suggest clicking “Read more”

  9. TBob says:

Diane: I read your post, but I also didn’t see the spot where you mentioned which organizations you are talking about. It’s common knowledge that Visa, Master and Paypal accept payment for all sorts of dodgy characters, if you don’t name them, what’s the point of the posting?

  10. Joe Drawly says:

Hey Stan. Pro tip, click on the [Read More] link ; )

  11. Joe Drawly says:

Forgot to say. Thank you for this blog post and link to the main article. Very interesting and disgusting at the same time.

  12. Chris says:

The problem the jews have, is that while constantly attacking their critics as anti-semites, they themselves attack others for not being jewish or going against their wishes.

The world is turning against the Israeli aparteid state, and their underling the US.

  13. DavidM says:

@Stan — regarding “extremist” groups, see the “Read more” link, above.

Regarding the legality of the settlements, see this extensively sourced WP article:-

  14. Fred deAlmeida says:

wow. really. wow. Israel is sadly destroying its own validity as a country. It is far more a terrorist group – a very well funded (US money) terrorist group. But that the hypocrisy of Visa, Mastercard and Paypal is so easily revealed… I hope Iceland is one of the few of countries that revoke their licences. But that is not enough, the incestuous nature of corporate ownership means they must keep them out with a great deal of vigilance.

I abhor a vacuum and strongly just and moral firms seem to be absent from the financial services that I wonder if maybe, just maybe, the tree of liberty requires refreshing.

  15. Diane Warth says:

“Read more” in bold type and hyper linked is not obvious enough? Apologies.

If one is not aware that settlements violate international law that is ignorant – a proper use of the adjective – whereas stupid would have been presumptuous and deserving of your snark, NIM. Are you capable of original thought? What is your definition of “racist propaganda” and why and when should it be censored?

Nels – I will continue to post snippets and links to the original articles. I will rethink “READ MORE”.
