Why George Bush is Insane

By Harold Pinter, ZNet, 30 March 2007

Earlier this year I had a major operation for cancer. The operation and its after-effects were something of a nightmare. I felt I was a man unable to swim bobbing about under water in a deep dark endless ocean. But I did not drown and I am very glad to be alive.

However, I found that to emerge from a personal nightmare was to enter an infinitely more pervasive public nightmare – the nightmare of American hysteria, ignorance, arrogance, stupidity and belligerence; the most powerful nation the world has ever known effectively waging war against the rest of the world. “If you are not with us you are against us” President Bush has said. He has also said “We will not allow the world’s worst weapons to remain in the hands of the world’s worst leaders”. Quite right. Look in the mirror chum. That’s you.

God Bless America

Here they go again,
The Yanks in their armoured parade
Chanting their ballads of joy
As they gallop across the big world
Praising America’s God.

The gutters are clogged with the dead
The ones who couldn’t join in
The others refusing to sing
The ones who are losing their voice
The ones who’ve forgotten the tune.

The riders have whips which cut.
Your head rolls onto the sand
Your head is a pool in the dirt
Your head is a stain in the dust
Your eyes have gone out and your nose
Sniffs only the pong of the dead
And all the dead air is alive
With the smell of America’s God.

Unwise Brinkmanship In Iran

Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity, Tom Paine, 29 March 2007

The following memorandum by the steering group of the Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity is signed by Ray Close, Princeton, N.J.; Larry Johnson, Bethesda, Md.; David MacMichael, Linden, Va.; Ray McGovern, Arlington, Va.; and Coleen Rowley, Apple Valley, Minn.

The frenzy in Americas corporate media over Irans detainment of 15 British Marines who may, or may not, have violated Iranian-claimed territorial waters is a flashback to the unrestrained support given the administrations war-mongering against Iraq shortly before the attack.

The Real ‘Existential Threat’
War with Iran augurs a global conflict
by Justin Raimondo, Antiwar.com, 30 March 2007

Our “free” media is so eager to accept the official British explanation of why their sailors/Marines wound up in Iranian custody that most Western “news” accounts are ignoring all evidence to the contrary…

Border Guard policemen filmed beating Palestinian youth

By Ali Waked, YNet News, 22 March 2007

The youth, Hindawi Qawarik, told Ynet that at about 12:30 pm Wednesday, he and his friends were leaving school when they noticed a Border Guard jeep not far from them.

“I told my friends that if we pass near them, they’ll hit us like they did a few weeks ago,” he said.

The policemen approached the youths and questioned them regarding a stone-throwing incident that took place earlier. They then decided to detain three of the teens for further questioning.

Hindawi was one of those three. “I pretended not to hear them and kept walking, because I could still remember the beating I got last week. But one cop chased me. When I saw that he was after me I halted. He dragged me back to the direction of the jeep, and when we got there he pushed me and pinned me to the wall, so that no one will be able to see what they were doing to me.”

At this point, according to Hindawi, the violence began. “Two of the policemen started hitting me in the legs with a rifle, punching me, slamming my head against the door of a nearby container, pushing me to the floor and hitting me in the head.

“I kept screaming: I haven’t done anything, you can check my ID.” Hindawi said that one of the policemen tried to persuade the others to stop, “but they just ignored him and kept on hitting me.”

According to the teen, one of the policemen also took books out of his school bag and tore some of them apart. Then they released him, not before “a few more slaps and punches.” Hindawi’s account has been verified by an eyewitness.

‘Our lives have become a nightmare’

Hindawi told Ynet that the police violence has already become a daily routine in the village. “We already got used to the beatings, but it makes it very hard for us to study very often we miss the first two classes of the day because they detain us, humiliate and hit us.”

Other Hawara residents told Ynet that soldiers and policemen, mostly Border Guard policemen, have turned their lives into a nightmare. “Once every few days the policemen and the soldiers declare a curfew in the village, claiming that Border Guard jeeps have been stoned,” they said.

One of the residents said that in addition to the violence, the policemen harass the village girls, a thing that causes “severe social problems within the Palestinian families and social and psychological problems for the girls, who are forced to handle curses that are unacceptable in our society.”

Sources at the village council claimed that complaints filed with the Coordination and Liaison Authority have yielded no results.

THE DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS HAS BETRAYED AMERICAN VOTERS, PROGRESSIVE SUPPORTERS, AND THE TROOPS IN IRAQ

Cindy Sheehan, Gold Star Families for Peace, 25 March 2007

THE DEMOCRATS ARE FUNDING ESCALATION: The Democratic leadership has proposed $100 billion of supplemental funding for an increased troop presence in Iraq. The leadership opted for the “slow bleed” policy over a month ago. This extends the occupation for at least another 18 months, and allows permanent placement of troops thereafter for “training” or “combating terrorism”. It also will permit the Bush Administration to initiate a war with Iran without Congressional oversight. The surge of 20,000 troops recently increased to 30,000 and will likely increase to 100,000 by year-end. Will the hapless Democrats then claim, “If only I knew then what I know now” as they have for the past year?

The “slow bleed” policy has some toothless requirements for presidential assertions of progress like those we’ve heard for the past four years from the Administration; these reporting requirements allow “slow bleed” proponents to make the preposterous claim they are “ending the war” by funding it. Amendments that would require withdrawal of US forces this year, the policy overwhelming favored by Americans, and the troops themselves, are not even being allowed for a vote by the leadership! The shameless short-term purpose of the Democratic policy is to embarrass Republicans with a Senate filibuster of the supplemental, or a presidential veto, and the longer-term aim is to help Democrats in the 2008 election by saddling the Republicans with intervention in an untenable civil war.

In 2002 the Democrats authorized Bush to invade Iraq (or any other country he deemed to support terrorism, for example Iran) in hope he would become involved in an unpopular war which would produce a Democratic White House. The Democrats 2007 policy is equally political, and may have the paradoxical effect of producing Republican victories in 2008. The prolongation of the occupation is now opposed by two-thirds of all Americans; we want our troops safely home by this Christmas, not political chicanery. As a consequence Americans now think even more poorly of Congress than ever; the failure to withdraw from Iraq dropped Democratic support of Congress from 44% to 33% according to the latest Gallup poll. The Democrats failure to stem what has become a Democrats war will be a factor in the 2008 elections.

A year ago 72% of the troops in Iraq said all troops should come home in 2006 but politicians did not heed their message. How much better we would be if our support included listening to them. Not another drop of blood should be spilled to protect cowardice by both political parties.

AMERICANS WANT TROOP WITHDRAWAL: The Democratic leadership has disregarded national polls showing that 60% of all Americans and 80% of Democratic voters oppose the increase troop levels in Iraq. Grassroots progressive organizations overwhelmingly oppose the occupation of Iraq and the recent escalation. One group closely allied to the Democratic leadership, MoveOn, has used antiwar sentiment to triple both its membership and fundraising, but has been AWOL from antiwar activity; its members are prohibited from demonstrations, and only vigils for the war dead are posted as events on their website. A month ago I wrote that MoveOn began efforts to support “slow bleed” while antiwar forces actively opposed it. Recently MoveOn fabricated a biased push-poll in which “85%” of respondents supported “slow bleed”; however, the 96% of the MoveOn members who favor withdrawal, and who were not offered a vote on that option, refused to participate in a sham. Congressional sources report that the spurious MoveOn poll, together with intensive bullying and bribing, was used to erode the principled opposition of congressional progressives.

A reliable poll conducted by True Majority, another group with progressive membership, found that only 24% favored the “slow bleed” policy while 76% favored immediate or near-term withdrawal. A Zogby poll sponsored by CODEPINK found that 90% of progressives/liberals favored near-term withdrawal. 96% of progressives question the push-poll used by MoveOn that gave such contrary results. Antiwar groups that fought for withdrawal (United for Peace and Justice, Progressive Democrats of America, US Labor Against the War, After Downing Street, Democrats.com, Peace Action, Code Pink, Democracy Rising, True Majority, Gold Star Families for Peace, Military Families Speak Out, Backbone Campaign, Iraq Veterans Against the War, Voters for Peace, Veterans for Peace, the Green Party) are irate at the MoveOn duplicity.

U.S. Govt. Vendetta Against Sami Al-Arian Continues

It’s contemptible that so many newspapers are reporting the end of Dr. Al-Arian’s hunger strike when so few to none reported on his condition during the two-month long ordeal.

But then they couldn’t assist the government in sending this message:

Contempt citation affirmed for former professor on hunger strike
Associated Press, 24 March 2007

RICHMOND, Virginia: A U.S. appeals court affirmed a civil contempt ruling against a former professor, just hours after the Palestinian ended a two-month hunger strike to protest his extended imprisonment.

Dr. Sami Al-Arian Suspends Hunger Strike
Tampa Bay Coalition for Justice and Peace, 23 March 2007

Community leaders, supporters and people of conscience welcomed Dr. Al-Arian’s decision to end his hunger strike. “I give thanks to God that Dr. Al Arian has suspended his fast for justice, because we need him in this world in good health,” said Pastor Warren Clark of Tampa. “Dr. Sami Al Arian is a real asset to our world and to his family. He is a clear articulate voice for a peace with justice settlement in Israel-Palestine. That is why Muslims and Christians are working side by side to call for his freedom, and will continue to do so.”

Nihad Awad, the executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) stated: “We welcome this positive development, and hope that the coming days will bring the justice that is so long overdue to Dr. Al-Arian and his family. We continue to appeal to the Department of Justice and the Attorney General to end Dr. Al-Arian’s suffering by honoring his original plea agreement.”

Said Dr. John Arnaldi of the Tampa-based Friends of Human Rights: “Mr. Attorney General, it is time to end the miscarriage of justice that has been inflicted upon Sami Al-Arian by your policies and return to the rule of law. Honor the plea agreement and release Sami Al-Arian.”

Rev. Marcia Free, of the United Church of Christ in Knoxville, TN. will visit with Dr. Al-Arian today. She said: “In this Lenten season of my faith, when we include fasting as a spiritual discipline, supporting our prayers for justice for all people, I am grateful to God for my Muslim brother Dr. Sami Al-Arian’s willingness to fast for justice. I believe God will answer our prayers, restoring Sami to his wife and children and that his sacrifice will further the cause of justice.”

Palestinian invents queuing socks

BBC News, 19 March 2007

A West Bank woman has developed special socks to help Palestinians suffering from swollen feet as they wait at Israeli military checkpoints.

Maram Abdel Latif, from Jenin, spent three years on the design and produced her first prototype in February.

The socks are made from nylon and gel that moulds around wearers’ feet to prevent discomfort, even if they stand for hours, as they sometimes have to.

Ms Latif, 22, says the socks are ideal for pregnant women and the elderly.

Red State Update: Fixin’ The Flag

Red State Update

Should it be legal under international law to criticize the state of Israel?

By William Blum, The Anti-Empire Report, 5 March 2007

“On Faith”, an Internet feature of the Washington Post and Newsweek magazine, poses questions each week to a panel of more than 50 persons from the world of religion. A recent question was “Can you be critical of Israel and not be anti-Semitic?”

Jonathan Sarna, professor of American Jewish history at Brandeis University replied: “Much depends on the motives of the critic. The unworthy critics today are easy to find. … their shrill voices are neither moderated by love nor tinged with sadness. Their desire is to see the Jewish state destroyed. The worthy critics, by contrast, are more scarce. … their words mingle praise along with reproof. They speak directly, sadly, and always in pain.” [Washington Post, February 24, 2007, p.B9]

So there you have it. A question so ridiculous on its face that it should not even be raised by two media giants or anyone else with any intellectual pretensions, but is being raised because of the unrelenting pressure of the Israeli lobby in the United States and throughout the world. It then receives an appropriately ridiculous answer.

Can anyone express reservations about a papal decree and not be anti-Catholic? Can anyone be critical of the pilgrimages to Mecca, which often end in tragedy, and not be anti-Islam? Can anyone be critical of the African negligence on the AIDS crisis and not be racist?

For anyone in the world to criticize the US war in Iraq do they have to love the United States? To be taken seriously — to be judged a “worthy critic” — must they in the same breath offer some kind of praise for the US? Are we to judge that those who don’t do so desire to see the American state destroyed? Can those in Palestine and Lebanon, upon whose heads and homes Israeli bombs fall, be worthy critics of Israeli policies? Are they not speaking “directly, sadly, and always in pain”?

Baghdad blast rattles UN chief

Written by Agencies, MWC News, 22 March 2007

Ban Ki-Moon took cover behind the podium at the sound of the explosion (Reuters)

The United Nations secretary-general has been shocked by a huge explosion in Baghdad’s secure Green Zone during an unannounced visit to Iraq.

Ban Ki-Moon was unharmed when a suspected rocket landed outside the office of Nuri al-Maliki, the prime minister, during a joint news conference on Thursday.

Small pieces of debris could be seen falling from the ceiling above Ban before the two men resumed the news conference.

The UN chief was making his first visit to Iraq since since taking office in January, to discuss a five-year reconstruction plan for the country announced last week.

Shortly before the explosion, al-Maliki had said that Ban’s visit was a sign that Iraq was on the road to stability.

“We consider it [the visit] a positive message to world in which you [Ban] confirm that Baghdad has returned to playing host to important world figures because it has made huge strides on the road toward stability,” the prime minister said.

Israel’s Kingmaker in the Wings

By Phil Zabriskie, Time Magazine, 22 March 2007

Could the most important player in Israeli politics be a Russian billionaire who owns two sports teams, has four passports (Israeli, French, Canadian, and Angolan) and is wanted in France on charges of illegal arms dealing? Arkady Gaydamak, with his wealth and ambition, may be in the position of kingmaker as Israel goes through a profound leadership crisis. Already, Gaydamak, according to one recent poll, is the most trusted public figure in the country.

“One hell of a Jew from Moscow…

We believe that Arkady worries too much about the investigation. In today’s Israel being investigated and convicted is the last trend for politicians. Just ask Omri, and his papa, Arik. It does not hurt once’ political career at all.”
